Kigali, Rwanda – A groundbreaking conversation is unfolding in Kigali this August. The Africa Mindset Reset Forum, taking place on 25–26 August 2026 at the Kigali Convention Centre, is not another conference about Africa’s problems. It is a deliberate intervention—a flagship, Africa-led convening on the leadership mindset and results culture the continent needs to own its development.
The question driving the Forum is simple but profound: Africa’s challenge this century isn’t a lack of potential. Our people, resources, geography, and history can drive global growth. The real question is organizing it: setting our own agenda, mobilising capital, building institutions, mastering technology, delivering at scale. That takes a mindset shift, because what got us here won’t get us there.
Why Now? The Next Development Challenge
As geopolitics shift and development finance tightens, African countries must meet their own challenges with home-grown solutions. Africa is moving from supplying the world with raw materials, markets, and labour to producing knowledge, technology, and capital. Home-grown is agency on our own terms. Our history and culture must fuel a new imagination, turning dignity into excellence, unity into systems, and freedom into contribution.
The Reset: Pan- to Meta-Africanism
At the heart of the Forum is a compelling conceptual shift. Pan-Africanism gave Africa the courage to stand. Meta-Africanism gives Africa the capacity to build.
Africa’s barriers run deeper than economics and politics. They are mental, cultural, and institutional. Pan-Africanism gave Africa the language of dignity, solidarity, and liberation. Meta-Africanism carries it forward: from solidarity to systems, resistance to value, identity to capability, aspiration to disciplined execution. It honours what Pan-Africanism built and asks the next question: what can Africa create with its freedom, together as one?
As Hon. Prof. Blessings Chinsinga, Professor at the African School of Governance, recently explained, the success of Meta-Africanism will be seen through the “transformation that we drive ourselves and sustain for generations” .
Seven Visible Shifts
The Reset entails seven visible shifts that will define the continent’s trajectory:

What the Forum Delivers
Over two days, intergenerational dialogues and idea-driven talks will showcase what’s already working and turn talk into commitments. The Forum will:
- Recognize mindset-shifting initiatives
- Launch practical pathways modelled on real leadership
- Shape ideas across governance, regional integration, state effectiveness, resource stewardship, education, dignified work, agrifood systems, and a culture of execution
The result: a sharper continental narrative, a community of aligned actors, practical action frameworks, and an Africa-led platform where ideas meet implementation.
Youth at the Centre
Strikingly, 80% of the room will be young and emerging leaders. The future African century cannot be built without the generation that will live it. As Liberian youth leader Alphia Faith Kemokai put it, “When young people have the right knowledge, exposure, and support, they move from simply demanding change to leading it in their communities.”
A youth-led webinar on 17 July 2026 preceded the Forum, gathering input from young people across the continent on what mindset shift Africa needs.
Who Convened the Forum?
The Forum is convened by the African School of Governance (ASG) under the leadership of its Co-Founders: H.E. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, and H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, former Prime Minister of Ethiopia. The ASG is a pan-African graduate institution launched in January 2025 to address the continent’s pressing governance challenges by equipping emerging leaders with the mindsets, skills, and knowledge necessary for effective leadership. Its mission is to nurture leaders to drive Africa’s sustainable development by providing innovative public policy education, cutting-edge research, and a platform for policy engagement that fosters transformative governance tailored to the continent’s unique values and opportunities. The Forum brings together leaders, institutions, and ideas shaping Africa’s future to Kigali—home to the ASG and one of Africa’s most functional governance environments.
