BRD and JALI Finance Sign FRW 4.5 Billion Deal to Accelerate Electric Mobility in Rwanda

Kigali, Rwanda – Today marks a significant milestone in Rwanda’s journey toward sustainable transport. The Development Bank of Rwanda (BRD) has signed a financing agreement of over FRW 4.5 billion with JALI Finance to expand access to electric motorcycles and support the country’s transition to clean and sustainable transport .

Motorcycles are one of Rwanda’s most widely used means of transport and an important source of income for thousands of riders. However, the sector remains largely dependent on fuel-powered motorcycles, which come with high fuel and maintenance costs while contributing to carbon emissions .

Why This Partnership Matters

Through this partnership, JALI Finance will be able to scale financing for motorcycle operators and make electric motorcycles more accessible and affordable. For riders, the transition means:

  • Lower operating costs – Electric motorcycles significantly reduce fuel and maintenance expenses
  • Improved profitability – Lower costs translate to higher take-home income for riders
  • More sustainable livelihoods – Reduced exposure to fuel price volatility
  • Cleaner urban environment – Lower carbon emissions and improved air quality

The partnership also contributes to the development of Rwanda’s broader electric mobility ecosystem, supporting opportunities across electric motorcycle distribution, maintenance, battery swapping, and charging services. As adoption grows, this can help create jobs, attract investment, and drive innovation in sustainable urban mobility .

Voices from the Signing Ceremony

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Stella Rusine Ntez, Chief Executive Officer of BRD, said:

“Clean mobility is central to Rwanda’s vision for a low-carbon economy. By partnering with Jali Finance, BRD is advancing climate finance and reaffirming its commitment to investments that reduce emissions, improve livelihoods, and support Rwanda’s transition to a greener economy.”

Félix Nkundimana, Chief Executive Officer of JALI Group and JALI Finance, highlighted the responsibility that comes with the partnership:

“We see this investment as both recognition of what we have achieved and a responsibility to achieve much more. The trust that BRD has placed in us challenges us to maintain the highest standards of governance, financial discipline, innovation and customer service as we scale our asset-financing business and expand access to productive assets for Rwandans.”

A Broader Commitment to Green Growth

This partnership reflects BRD’s commitment to financing investments that deliver economic, social, and environmental impact while supporting Rwanda’s national development priorities. By enabling greater access to productive assets and supporting the shift to cleaner transport, BRD is helping build a more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable mobility sector while contributing to Rwanda’s ambition to become a leader in green growth .
